Suryanamaskar: The Ultimate Yoga Sequence for Total Body Wellness!!


The Sun has been a symbol of power and divinity in various cultures throughout history. In Ancient times, Lord Rama himself was advised to worship the Sun god to achieve victory. The term SuryaNamaskar stems from Sanskrit, where “Surya” refers to the Sun and “Namaskar” means “greeting” or “salutation”. Surya Namaskar is a combination of religious, mental, and physical exercises, that also combine asana, pranayama, meditation, and mantra to make it complete Sadhana. Today, the practice of Surya Namaskar has become an essential part of yoga, not only as a physical exercise but also as a spiritual practice. Surya Namaskar, also known as Sun Salutation, has immense potential in maintaining physical and mental health.


Origin:

The origins of Surya Namaskar can be traced back to India's ancient physical training practices, such as Danda exercises, which were used by wrestlers and martial artists. However, it was not originally considered a part of traditional yoga. Instead, the modern form of Surya Namaskar was developed in the 1920s by the King of Aundh, the Late Shrimant Balasaheb Pant Pratinidhi. Later, Sri K V Iyer and Sri Krishnamacharya also contributed to the development of Surya Namaskar.

Surya Namaskar combines physical exercises with yoga, creating a unique practice that has become a precursor to modern-day physical exercises. The practice's basis is said to be the Danda exercises explained in the ancient Indian text Vyayama Dipika, and it has similarities to the push-ups used for bodybuilding in Western countries.

12 Dynamic Postures To do in Suryanamaskar:


Suryanamaskar, also known as Sun Salutation, is a set of twelve dynamic postures performed in a sequence. Each step is coordinated with a specific breathing pattern. The twelve steps of Suryanamaskar in the BSY tradition are as follows:

1)Pranamasana (Prayer pose) - Stand at the edge of your mat with your feet together and palms joined in prayer position.

2)Hastauttanasana (Raised arms pose) - Inhale and raise your arms above your head, bending backward slightly from the waist.

3)Hasta Padasana (Hand to foot pose) - Exhale and bend forward from the waist, keeping your spine straight, and touch your hands to the floor beside your feet.

4)Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian pose) - Inhale, step back your right leg, place your knee on the floor, and look up.

5)Dandasana (Stick pose) - Hold your breath and bring your left leg back to stretch your body in a straight line, like a plank pose.

6)Ashtanga Namaskara (Salute with eight parts) - Exhale and lower your knees, chest, and forehead to the floor, keeping your hips up and toes tucked in.

7)Bhujangasana (Cobra pose) - Inhale and lift your head, chest, and shoulders off the floor, keeping your elbows close to your body.

8)Parvatasana (Mountain pose) - Exhale and lift your hips up, straightening your arms and legs, forming an inverted V shape with your body.

9)Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian pose) - Inhale and step your right foot forward, placing it between your hands, and look up.

10)Hasta Padasana (Hand to foot pose) - Exhale and bring your left foot forward, touching your hands to the floor beside your feet.

11)Hastauttanasana (Raised arms pose) - Inhale and slowly raise your arms above your head, bending backward slightly from the waist.

12)Pranamasana (Prayer pose) - Exhale and bring your palms together in the prayer position.

These twelve steps constitute half a round of Suryanamaskar. To complete one round, the same sequence is repeated with the opposite side of the body in Ashwasanchalanasana (step 4). The dynamic postures in Suryanamaskar are designed to help improve lung capacity and breathing patterns.


BeejMantras:

In addition to the physical postures and breathing patterns, Suryanamaskar also involves the chanting of mantras. The twelve steps of Suryanamaskar are associated with the twelve names of the sun, and practitioners chant these names while performing the postures. The twelve names are:

Air pollution is a global problem, and many cities are facing the challenge of reducing air pollution. Trees are a well-known method to combat air pollution, but there is often little space to plant trees in densely populated urban areas. Thankfully, Serbian scientists have introduced a revolutionary solution to combat air pollution in urban areas, The Liquid Tree. 


What is a Liquid Tree?

Liquid Tree, nicknamed LIQUID 3 is a Modern urban photobioreactor, which mimics plants in their ability to do so and transform carbon dioxide into oxygen. It is the first of its kind in Serbia and a significant breakthrough in the ongoing battle against air pollution. The Liquid Tree sits prominently on Makedonska Street in front of the Municipality of Stari Grad in Belgrade, Serbia. This place is a busy urban area with the highest carbon dioxide emissions in the country.

How Does a Liquid Tree Work?

The Liquid Tree photo-bioreactor is made up of a glass tank holding approximately 600 liters of water and microalgae. It also has a solar panel that generates power for a small pump, which brings air into the tank through tiny openings, allowing the microalgae to perform photosynthesis. This process converts CO2 and water into oxygen, which is then released into the air. The Liquid Tree is more efficient than trees because trees in urban areas are suffering due to exposure to high levels of toxic gases and dust.

Broader Practical Applications of Liquid Tree:


The Liquid Tree is not only a solution to air pollution in dense urban areas, but it also serves as a bench, complete with mobile phone chargers, and features a solar panel for lighting at night. The project aims to promote and expand the use of microalgae in Serbia for various purposes, such as wastewater treatment, composting, biomass and biofuel production, and air purification.


Recognition for Innovative and Sustainable Design:

The innovative liquid tree has garnered widespread recognition and acclaim for its impressive performance and sustainable design. It was awarded a position as one of the 11 best climate-smart and innovative solutions by the Climate Smart Urban Development project. This project was created by UNDP, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and sponsored by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The limitations of the Liquid Tree in comparison to traditional trees and plants:      

            


Carbon Sequestration: While traditional trees can sequester carbon, Liquid trees cannot. Carbon sequestration is the process by which carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is absorbed and stored in trees, plants, and other carbon sinks. This process helps to mitigate climate change. The Liquid Tree can only convert carbon dioxide into oxygen but cannot store it, making it less effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Biodiversity: Trees and plants are essential components of urban biodiversity. They provide habitats for birds, insects, and other animals. The Liquid Tree, on the other hand, cannot provide such habitats. It can only produce oxygen and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, making it less effective in promoting urban biodiversity.

Aesthetic Value: Trees and plants are known for their aesthetic value. They add beauty to the urban environment and create a sense of calm and well-being. The Liquid Tree cannot provide the same aesthetic value as traditional trees and plants.

Cost: The cost of installing and maintaining a Liquid Tree is higher than that of planting and maintaining traditional trees. Liquid Trees require electricity to run, regular cleaning and maintenance, and periodic replacement of microalgae. In contrast, traditional trees require minimal maintenance, and once established, they do not need to be replaced.

Energy Efficiency: Although the Liquid Tree is powered by a solar panel, it still requires energy to operate the pump that circulates air through the algae tank. Traditional trees, on the other hand, do not require any external energy source to produce oxygen.

Smart Bandages: Revolutionizing Wound Treatment!!

These wounds are particularly problematic for people with diabetes, whose bodies can have difficulty healing. However, a new kind of Smart Bandage developed at Caltech could make treating chronic wounds easier, more effective, and less expensive.

This unique bandage is made of a flexible and stretchy polymer that contains electronics and medication. Unlike traditional bandages, which are typically made of absorbent materials, the smart bandage can monitor the wound's conditions, such as pH level or temperature, and detect molecules like lactate or uric acid that indicate inflammation or infection.

The bandage's embedded electronics allow it to send real-time data wirelessly to a nearby computer, tablet, or smartphone for review by a medical professional or the patient. Additionally, the bandage can deliver medication stored within it directly to the wound site to treat inflammation and infection or apply a low-level electrical field to stimulate tissue growth for faster healing.
